The EEE 901 is what the 900 should have been. Improved specs, battery life, and the addition of a SIM card holder for UMTS and 3G internet access makes the 901 a very mobile netbook.
Check out a gallery of images of the 901.
- Design: The Laptop has gotten a design upgrade, with a well designed touchpad, better buttons, and a shiny black finish. The glossy finish is a matter of taste, but doesn't really matter too much in black.
- Sturdiness: The EEE series is extremely sturdy, due to the SSD chip. No real changes here (it's essentially the same chassis as the 900). The hinge has been upgraded and sports metal caps.
- Software: The 901 is delivered with Windows. Linux isn't really an option with UMTS providers only providing Windows software to authenticate. Apparently the modem hardware also has problems in Linux. The Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor does enable Windows to run pretty smoothly, something the 900 could not really do.
- Battery life: 4 hours of heavy use. Can be extended to 9 hours with light use and powersaving. At last the EEE is really useful as a mobile netbook.
- Ease of use: The keyboard is the same as the 900, but the 901 has an upgraded touchpad, with metallic buttons. The touchpad is no longer recessed, which could lead to more focus-loss when typing. Windows also has it's share of problems running on a screen that is only 800px high, and so do some third party applications.
Overall, I should have waited for the 901. Too bad.
